Do you have a group of friends whose main form of communication is sending Reels via Instagram DMs? It's a pretty common thing - I know I have individual and group conversations in the DMs with many different friends/groups!

If you're managing a brand on a platform with a Direct Message function, which is most of them, it might be a good idea to consider making DM-able content a part of your marketing strategy.

There are a few ways you can go about optimizing your content for the DMs - and while it shouldn’t be the main focus of your content, paying attention to having content that could easily be DMed will help increase the chances it’ll be shared amongst friends.

From being funny to speaking to certain values, creating content that resonates with your target audience is the cornerstone concept.

Now, let’s dig into some actionable specifics.

The 4 E’s of Dm-able content

When your content is shareable via DMs, it opens up opportunities for organic reach and engagement. This type of word-of-mouth sharing can do wonders for your brand and amplify your marketing strategy’s goals. It’s a unique approach to content creation that goes beyond the standard tactics of a content strategy because it’s putting your brand in conversations where the likelihood of people scrolling by, ignoring, and dismissing your message is much lower.

Here are the 4 E's to think through when creating content that's ideal for DMs:

💓 Ethos: "I feel this in my soul"
Creating content that resonates deeply with your audience's values or experiences will make them feel a personal connection to your brand. This could be a motivational quote, a relatable story, or anything that aligns with your brand's core message.

🤣 Entertainment: "LMFAOOO"
Humor is a universal language. Entertaining content that makes people laugh or smile is highly shareable. Think memes, funny videos, or clever commentary that fits your brand's personality.

😲 Emotion: "OMG/WTF"
Emotional content that elicits strong reactions—whether it's surprise, joy, or even a bit of shock—can drive people to share with their friends and family. This could be a heartwarming story, a surprising fact, or an emotionally charged image or video.

💡 Education: "Thought you could use this"
Informative content that provides value is always appreciated. Whether it's a how-to guide, a helpful tip, or industry insights, educational content can position your brand as an authority and make it worthy of being shared.


Important - Exclamation Point.

VERY Important: This does NOT mean you need to create wild and crazy content just for the sake of getting it DMed because of its shock value, clickbait, brain rot, or other controversial matter!

Your content should be HIGHLY relatable to your brand (reinforcing your brand's image) PLUS be DM-able. It has to be relevant to your brand to translate to your business's overarching goals— so be strategic!!


Finally, it doesn't hurt to give a little nudge to help inspire sharing via DMs. Including verbiage like "send this to a friend who may find this useful" or "share this with a [insert relevant characteristic] person in your life" can go a long way.
